To ensure the health and safety of its employees and customers, Emirates is stepping up precautionary measures at the airport and on board flights.
April 21: Having previously announced a number of outbound passenger flights and rapid testing for coronavirus at Dubai International airport, Emirates Airline will now ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn by cabin crew, boarding agents and ground staff. The decision was made in order to ensure maximum healthy and safety for employees and for passengers who will be coming in direct contact with Emirates employees.
Moving forward, Emirates staff will be wearing personal protective equipment, widely referred to at PPE, which includes a protective disposable gown, a safety visor, masks and gloves — all to be worn over the current Emirates uniforms.
COVID-19 precautions at Dubai International airport
Putting further measurements in place to minimize risks, there are also a number of updates from Dubai International Airport:
- Whether a member of staff or a passenger, Dubai International Airport has made the wearing of masks and gloves mandatory.
- Thermal scanners monitor the temperatures of all passengers and employees stepping into the airport.
- Physical distancing indicators have been placed on the ground and at waiting areas to help travellers maintain the necessary distance during check-in and boarding.
- The airport team has also installed protective barriers at each check-in desk to provide additional safety reassurance to passengers and employees during interaction over the counter.
Precautions being taken onboard
On board Emirates’ flights, seats are now pre-allocated to guests, and vacant seats are placed between individual passengers or family groups to ensure that physical distancing is being observed.
For health and safety reasons, the airline has also modified its inflight services. Food and beverages are still being offered; however, they are presented in the form of bento-style boxes to reduce contact between the crew and customers during meal service and to minimise interactions. These personal boxes provide customers with sandwiches, beverages, snacks and desserts.
Similarly, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus by touch, magazines and other printed reading materials are temporarily unavailable.
The airline has also made changes to cabin baggage policies; for now, cabin baggage is not accepted on flights, and carry-on items are limited to a laptop, handbag, briefcase or baby items. Any other items have to be checked in, and Emirates is adding this cabin baggage allowance to the customer’s check-in baggage allowance.
From check-in through to disembarking the flight at the final destination, it is also mandatory for Emirates passengers to wear their masks and gloves.
