A far-flung paradise serving up gourmet dining and world-class diving

A pearl of the North Ari Atoll, this tiny island is home to just 30 villas: a setting so quiet and far flung, it feels like a hideaway all of your own. Kandolhu is reached by seaplane and speedboat, a journey that whisks you to a paradise playground of flawless beaches, gourmet dining and world-class diving. Each of the villas has its own private pool, verandah, and direct access to the beach or ocean – not to mention a thoughtful array of little extras, such as a GoPro camera and iPad. To make the most of this spectacular setting, book an Ocean Pool Villa: facing the sunset, they feature deep-soak bathtubs and infinity pools overlooking the sea, with private daybeds and decks for sunbathing in solitude.

The best bites

Combining the wild beauty of the beach with the elegance of an exclusive bar, Vilu’s sea-breezy terrace is an ideal spot for sundowners – and for dinner, you have five restaurants to choose from. At Sea Grill you’ll enjoy succulent cuts of steak and seafood, while Olive offers flavours from France, Italy and the Levant. For a light lunch, head to Ata Roa for Latin American tacos and ceviche with spectacular ocean views – while Banzai’s chefs specialise in sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki. The Market has something for everyone: from opulent breakfast buffets to international à la carte menus. There are three meal plans to choose from, as well as plentiful private dining options – whether in your villa, on the beach, or on a jetty beneath the stars.

The must-do activities

You don’t have to venture far to experience the Maldives’ incredible wildlife: Kandolhu’s house reef is teeming with turtles, clownfish and more – and is easy to explore on complimentary snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding jaunts. Of course, you can venture further afield on scuba expeditions with the Dive School (some of the area’s best dive sites are located just a few minutes away), or take to the waves on sunset cruises and fishing trips. Varu Spa, tucked away in the island’s lush gardens, offers signature organic Voya treatments – as well as massages with locally-sourced oils and herbs, and saunas and steam rooms for a decadent detox.
