It’s important during this strange time of social distancing and isolation that we use our time wisely and help others.
While it might be tempting to waste away the days looking at cat videos, there are plenty of ways you can be helping others around the world, without having to leave the comfort of your sofa.
Here are a few things to get you started.
Help local/small businesses
In these uncertain times many companies and business owners are suffering and so there’s never been a better time to help out local and small businesses. Order from a local store, and if you come across a small business, perhaps on social media, do your best to support them. Buy one of their products, order one of the books, subscribe to their mailing lists etc. Giving your money to a start-up will make a big difference at these testing times.
Reconnect with people
If you’re based in the UAE, you’ll be well aware that video calling bans have been lifted and apps like Zoom are working better than ever. Use this time to check in with friends and family, see how they’re doing, help people struggling – and don’t forget to ask them what you can do for them. This is a great time to reach out to people in other countries that you may have lost touch with over the years. It’s important to check on friends and family to see how they’re coping as we’re all in this together after all, and a quick video call can be the difference between someone having a good day or bad day. Skype, Whatsapp Video and Houseparty have also been unlocked in the UAE.
Send a gift
Everyone likes getting a delivery and what better time to surprise someone with a gift than when we’re stuck indoors with little else to do. Thankfully, major online retailers such as Amazon are still delivering so you’re able to make someone’s day from the comfort of your own home. Interestingly, there’s been a global surge in sales of jigsaw puzzles over the last two weeks. Sales in the USA alone are up 370% year-on-year. Sites like GoFundMe also allow you to support individuals around the world.
Arrange a virtual workout
During this time of social distancing, hiking mountains or hanging out with friends isn’t an option; however, thanks to the wonder of modern technology, it’s possible to arrange virtual hangouts, which can connect you with people around the world in an instant. Zoom is a particularly good app for this as you can see everyone on screen at the same time. You can also invite others to join your workout via your social media channels, so no matter where they are in the world you can reach them. Exercise is vital for keeping up your mental health so let’s make the most of this free time.
Donate to charity
There’s never a bad time to be giving, but now more than ever global charities need our donations with the outbreak putting further strain on already stretched resources around the world. Support ranges from donating to the healthcare industry, protecting populations and helping non-profit organisations. You can find more information on how you can help people and those most affected by COVID-19 here.
