The Water Retreats by Soneva Fushi will become the largest overwater one and two-bedroom villas in the world when they open on September 25

Quiet island-living, endless blue hues, irresistibly fresh food and nothing but the sound of waves to fall asleep to; it’s no wonder the Maldives is known as paradise on Earth. With the 1000+ islands being a short-haul flight for GCC residents, the country is a popular destination for quick escapes from hectic day-to-day life.

And the new addition of water retreats by Soneva Fushi has just made it that bit more tempting to book a last-minute getaway. Not only will the eight builds boast ultimate privacy, 360-ocean views and easy access for holidaymakers keen to snorkel, but they’re also record-breaking.

Both the one-bedroom and two-bedroom overwater villas will become the largest in the world once open – the first sizing up at 584 sqm./6,286 sqft, the latter at a staggering 857 sqm./9,224 sqft.

Unlike the designs at sister resort Soneva Jani, these interiors will offer natural wood panelling over a white-washed finish, bedrooms situated on the ground floor, and a pool on the front deck overlooking the ocean. The pool deck is also larger, leaving more space for sun loungers and sunbeds including more shaded areas. Catamaran nets let guests sit above the waves, while curved steps lead from the pool deck to the water below.

In terms of aesthetics, the interior colour palette consists of light blues, greens, and soft beiges to blend with the calming ocean hues and island greenery.

On the new development, Sonu Shivdasani, Soneva’s CEO and Founder said: “We are very proud to announce this exciting new phase for Soneva Fushi.

“When we first launched Soneva Fushi in 1995, we redefined tourism in the Maldives with our unique vision that pioneered the concept of sustainable luxury. After 25 years at the forefront of the global luxury tourism sector and as a bucket-list destination in the Maldives, we are always striving to evolve with our guests’ ever-changing needs.

“While we will always remain true to the much-loved spirit and laid-back ethos of Soneva Fushi, the new Water Retreat villas will elevate our offering. Having overwater villas gives our guests the luxury of choice, to stay amongst the deep greens of the jungle with the beach just steps away, or wake up to panoramic views of the ocean.”
